How is a class structured?
The classes will include multi-level instruction with gentle modifications intended for beginning students, anyone with limited flexibility, and ideal for healing and relaxation. Additional options will be offered for anyone who would like to build strength, increase flexibility, and challenge his/her body.
Although the classes will vary, you will often find a few moments of quiet centering at the beginning of class. Following warm-ups and basic stretches, you will be led through various standing and seated postures. Towards the end of class, you will be guided through gentle stretches and end with time dedicated towards relaxation. In the language of yoga, the final pose is known as shavasana. The instructor will guide you out of your relaxation pose and back to a seated posture.
How often should I attend classes?
Regular attendance is highly recommended, and we understand that it may not be practical. You can benefit from the practice by simply taking one or two of your favorite stretches and adding them to your daily wellness routine between classes.
Our bodies are designed to move so just taking some time for healthy movement is a step in the right direction. Our bodies and minds also need time to rest. Bringing awareness to your needs and the choices you make is practicing yoga.
I have heard that yoga is a spiritual practice, what does that mean?
Yoga is often referred to as a spiritual discipline as it is a holistic practice. The yoga asanas (postures or exercises) are one element of the philosophy.
Yoga helps balance the physical body and at the same time can help enrich your inner life. The word yoga comes from the Sanskrit word “yuj,” which means “yoke.” This is often referred to as union. You may have heard yoga described as the union of the mind, body and spirit.
Through the disciplined practice of yoga, you learn to address imbalances in the physical body which may challenge you to address imbalances in other areas of your life. Yoga helps you become more aware of your natural rhythm and will meet you where you are every time you practice.
